Nursing students use virtual reality to improve skills: ‘It brings joy to learning’
Louis, MO – Virtual reality isn’t just about video games.
Some nursing students at St. Louis they use it for high-tech training without the need for real patients.
The Goldfarb School of Nursing has integrated VR into the curriculum to give students the opportunity to hone skills in a unique way.

As the demand for nurses continues to rise – McKinsey & Company projects a shortage of 200,000 to 450,000 nurses next year – this technology helps the health workers of the future to prepare more effectively and efficiently.
Katie Jett, program director at Goldfarb, said virtual reality not only helps students with clinical skills but also makes learning more engaging.

“It’s a new way for people to connect and communicate with each other, and that can have an impact on an older person, because that’s not how we’re wired,” Jett told Fox News.

NURSING SCHOOLS URGE TRAINING TO START SHORTAGE
In addition to clinical practice, VR simulations help students practice their communication and bedside manner.
Zykita Deal, a nursing student at Goldfarb, shared how she practices delivering advice to a virtual patient.

“I was just talking to him about eating better, how to have a better schedule with his medication … and I was giving him recommendations that he shouldn’t [as] he is lonely, he still has his son and they can still make the food that his wife used to make,” said Deal.

“He was able to keep his wife’s memory alive” in this way, he added.
Students equip themselves with VR glasses and controllers to perform various tasks, while instructors select the responses of virtual patients, creating realistic situations that challenge students.

Lesley Schwartz, another nursing student, said technology helps her prepare for real-world situations.

“There will be times when important things will be around you easily,” he said.
