Colorado lands 5-star quarterback amid Deion Sanders NFL coaching rumors
The Colorado Buffaloes don’t play their next game until Saturday against Kansas, but the football program had a big win on Thursday.
Five-star quarterback Julian Lewis committed to Colorado during the “Pat McAfee Show.”
Lewis had been committed to USC since August 2023, rescinded his commitment on Sunday and officially transferred to Colorado.

Lewis is the No. 2 overall recruit on ESPN’s recruiting database. The quarterback was originally the top pick in the 2026 class but was reclassified in the 2025 class in January.
Lewis, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, is poised to succeed Shedeur Sanders as Colorado’s current quarterback, as Sanders will be the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“It was really big for me just coming in and following Shedeur, just seeing what he did in Colorado and how he responded. It’s really a blessing to be put in this position to follow him and his father. I couldn’t beat him,” said Lewis during the show.

Lewis said part of the reason for choosing Colorado is that Deion Sanders said the best players will play, giving Lewis a chance to start as a freshman.
Colorado getting Lewis’ commitment means the Buffaloes are less likely to hire someone aggressively through the transfer window.
Sanders’ name has been in NFL head coaching rumors, but Lewis’ commitment indicates the Colorado head coach may not be leaving the NFL anytime soon.
Lewis is from Carrollton, Georgia, and recently took an unofficial visit to the Georgia Bulldogs, as well as showing interest in Indiana before heading to Colorado.

Colorado is currently 8-2 and on a path to the College Football Playoff. If the 16th-ranked Buffaloes get a win over Kansas and a loss to No. 12 in No. 21 Arizona State, will give the Buffaloes the lead in the Big 12.
The Big 12 lead would put Colorado in an automatic bid. The committee may have to name the Buffaloes No. 4, but they will still need to win the Big 12 title to earn a spot.
