Kim Deal Feels ‘Weird’ About Having Her Face On The Cover Of A Solo Album

Kim Deal he’s been in the music business for a long time, but he’s still experiencing surprises while making his first solo album.

Choosing the cover art No One Loves You More presented the Breeders frontwoman, 63, with a number of options she had never considered before – for example, putting her face on a record.

“Someone at the label said, ‘You know, you can be in it,'” Deal was told exclusively. Us Weekly ahead of his album’s release on Friday, November 22. “And I was like, ‘I can be on it, right?’ Why not? I don’t have a better idea.”

The final product features Deal afloat in a sea of faux with his guitar, some amps and a flamingo. The singer said he still feels “weird” seeing himself in the album ads.

“I think this is treason, I look at the album cover, it’s funny – and then they start talking about the promo,” he recalled. “I think my face will be on a vinyl record. You buy it at the store, it will be fine. But no. … It’s like, ‘Oh, no, that’s my mom—on the face, and it’s in a product ad now.’ And that was a big surprise to me.”

After nearly 40 years in the music industry, Deal is used to being in the public eye — but he rarely faces it alone. Apart from the few solo songs she released in the early 2010s, she has always been part of a group – Pixies, the Breeders, the Amps – so making a full Kim Deal record was a new adventure. To deliver No One Loves You More in life, Deal worked with many longtime collaborators, including his twin sister, Kelley’s feastand fellow Breeders Jim Macpherson. However, he said he was happy to be in the driver’s seat full time this time.

“I remember working with him Mando [Lopez] in Teacher’s things. … We’ve been rehearsing it, like weeks and weeks coming up with ideas and things like that,” Kim explained. “This time, it’s a song [would be] very good… and I had probably gotten a demo or knew exactly what I was looking for. “

His sister, however, had to do more legwork. “Kelley had to do some kind of band song where he came and I didn’t let him go until he had all kinds of different guitar ideas for this song that I was working on,” Kim recalls. “It’s like, ‘Wait, don’t go. Wait a minute. Come here! I need something of this category now.’”

Another editor Kim often works with No One Loves You More he is a famous producer Steve Albiniwho died in May at the age of 61. The duo’s first collaborative project was the 1988 Pixies album Surfer Rosaand later joined several Breeders LPs.

“You are known for this boy [energy] and he certainly was,” said Kim. But one thing that really struck me, one day we were doing a song called ‘Summerland,’ and that song has an orchestra. … He was very respectful. He was very talkative. All headphone boxes work. The microphone is already set. There are seats for everyone. Yes, all equipment is standard, because it is. Everyone knew what they were doing. It was just so well-executed, and it’s like, ‘Goddamn, he’s good at this.’ I just don’t see him that much. And to me, that was really impressive.”
