Joe Biden wanders through the Amazon jungle after the speech

Joe Biden wandered through the Amazon rainforest after giving a warning speech about the dangers of climate change.

Dressed in a light blue shirt with an open neck, black trousers and Aviator sunglasses, the 81-year-old US president turned from the stage and jumped onto the green.

The purpose of the photocall was to highlight the dangers of global warming, which has been dismissed by his successor, Donald Trump.

Before going to Lima, the capital of Peru, Mr. Biden went to Manaus, the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon.

He had flown by helicopter to the confluence of the Amazon and Negro rivers, seeing for the first time the dramatic drop in water levels due to the worst drought in decades.

He emphasized the role of trees in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere following a meeting with national leaders.

“The world’s forest trees breathe carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, but every minute, the world cuts down an amount equal to ten football fields,” he said.

He also announced a donation of $50 million (£40 million) to the Amazon Fund, bringing the total amount in the US to $100 million.

Mr Biden added that he would leave the next administration with a strong climate policy to build on, if they chose to do so.
