Trump’s pick for FCC chairman says agency will ‘do away with’ DEI increases next year

President-elect Donald Trump’s appointment as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission said early Monday that the agency’s focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) will end next year.

Brendan Carr, who currently serves as the FCC’s top Republican member, sent a summary of the agency’s budget request for Fiscal Year 2025 to X, which said the second top strategic goal is to promote DEI.

“The FCC’s most recent budget request stated that promoting DEI was the agency’s second highest [sic] strategic goal. Starting next year, the FCC will end its DEI promotion,” Carr wrote.

The only strategic objective listed before promoting DEI was to pursue a 100% broadband policy.

The agency said in part it wants to “get a deeper understanding of how [its] laws, policies, and programs may promote or hinder progress in diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.”

The goal will be achieved by pursuing “concentrated action and investment” to eliminate any barriers that “hold back disadvantaged or underserved individuals and communities,” the FCC’s FY2025 budget says.

“Furthermore, the FCC believes it is most effective when its staff reflects the knowledge, judgment, and input of people from many different backgrounds,” the section concludes. “Improving equity is at the core of our administration and policy-making processes and will benefit all Americans.”

The four goals listed behind the promotion of DEI were, empowering consumers, improving public safety and national security, improving America’s global competitiveness and promoting excellence.
