Woman in coma after trying to save Brian Harman’s son from diving
PGA Tour golfer Brian Harman has asked for prayers for the woman who saved her 6-year-old son from drowning in the Florida ocean last month.
During a press conference at the RSM Classic in Saint Simons Island, Georgia, on Tuesday, Harman said his wife and children were on vacation in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, when the incident occurred.
While bodyboarding, Harman’s son was pulled overboard by a rip current on Oct. 13. A family friend, Cathy Dowdy, tried to save the boy but was unable to find him. Another man walking on the beach, Crane Cantrell, reached Harman’s son and pulled him to safety.
“I wanted to use whatever platform I had to raise awareness of what Cathy did, what Crane did,” Harman said. “They ignored themselves and went into the water and saved my boy, and how do you thank people like that? I don’t know unless you just say what you think.
“I think being brave and doing something like that to people who aren’t your blood is the best thing you can do in this life.”
Harman, who won the 2023 Open Championship, was competing in the Asian Tour’s SJM Macao Open in China when the incident happened.
Dowdy, of Brunswick, Georgia, was hospitalized in a coma for six weeks, according to Harman. He was recently transferred to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia.
According to St. Johns Citizen in Florida, a lifeguard pulled Dowdy from the water and administered CPR until first responders arrived on the scene.
“Cathy is still badly hurt,” Harman said. “He is high in Savannah and we are thinking of him. The outpouring of support we have received from the community of Glynn County and Saint Simons is one of the most touching things I have ever experienced.”
